Volunteer from home

Not everyone is able or wanting to attend meetings, work in crowds, or even with people, or be available on someone else’s schedule – some people stay up all night.

If you or someone you know fits this loose description, please know there volunteer jobs you can do online.

One of my favourite places to go is www.zooniverse.org.

The Zooniverse is the world’s largest and most popular platform for people-powered research. This research is made possible by volunteers — more than a million people around the world who come together to assist professional researchers. Our goal is to enable research that would not be possible, or practical, otherwise. Zooniverse research results in new discoveries, datasets useful to the wider research community, and many publications.

You can look at microscope slides, translate manuscripts, transcribe handwritten historical documents, you can watch live feeds of animals in their habitats and report on their activities, you can classify birds, kelp and even xrays of human eye balls.

There are always directions; most tasks are pretty straight forward!

I am currently transcribing Anti-Slavery manuscripts housed at the Boston Public Library. They are handwritten letters between anti-slavery activists during the 19th century. I will admit, it takes a bit of perseverance in the beginning, to read the letters as the writing style is a little different, but if you can’t, you just move on. No need to download anything or even join! Just start transcribing. This particular project is not supported on mobiles or tablets. But lots of other projects that are. https://www.antislaverymanuscripts.org/
